I'm getting bitten!!!!
the number of bites I'm getting recently has really increased...and I'm trying to figure out if its from the chickens or the dogs. One of the dogs had fleas a couple of weeks ago, but was treated and all the rest look clean. I have checked random hens and seen nothing on them...but I'm wondering could they have northern mite??they bite you right? These bites are HORRENDOUSLY itchy!!!!

Sunday, April 15th, 2012 sounds like dog flea bites to me Penny...if the area is raise and red and if you can make out a very small hole dot in the centre of the red lump its a flea bite... when you did the dogs just wondering if you did their beds, house rugs etc... as well?
Ms May
Sunday, April 15th, 2012 I threw out all the bedding belonging to the dog who had fleas...but I can't see any on the others...would you treat though just in case? can't see a bite hole in the middle...they are red and raised though. I seem to be getting them mostly in the ankle area? grrr...so itchy!!!

Sunday, April 15th, 2012 I had the same problem Penny, if you used something like frontline spray or a spot on treatment you really should not need to treat the animals again, as these products are a treatment and a preventive, but I'd frontline spray bedding again, and rugs or any fabric items around where the dogs normally lay...... if like me you let the dogs on your bed in the mornings... stripe out the bed put all the linen in the washing machine on a high temp.. 30o will not kill fleas, flea bite are very very itchy and can itch for days and days, use an antihistamine cream or tablet and good luck getting it sorted Penny x

Sunday, April 15th, 2012 PL, fleas only spend a small amount of time on the animal so you need to treat his house (and/or yours if he comes in) with an appropriate spray. It'll kill eggs, larvae and fleas for 6mths to 12mths depending on the product.
Could be midge bites?
gentian
Sunday, April 15th, 2012 but penny has them on her ankles only Gentian...we get midges, cattle fly and sand fly around here too they are also a nightmare..... I'd say just get the hoover out and then treat all the rooms the dogs normally are especially fabric rug etc that where the little shits hide away.xx
Ms May
Sunday, April 15th, 2012 would do a major flea kill on animals and home and also get some spray or wipes for yourself when out doors to keep midges at bay. they bite exposed areas like ankles, wrists and neck and are very itchy.
little chick
Sunday, April 15th, 2012 I'm no stranger to midge bites!!they always go for my temples for some reason!!!..but these are definitely not that:( I'll get the frontline spray so...all of the dogs are outdoor farmdogs, so they haven't been near the bedroom thatn god! Although I do let them sit on the kitchen floor...hmmm...lots of cleaning and spraying for me so!

Sunday, April 15th, 2012 It also happened to me Penny and always on one ankle. It drove me mad and only I was getting bitten. We had a cat, no dogs and she wasn't allowed in the bedrooms. Anyway, one day I was just chatting to the hubby and I actually felt the bugger bite me. I was wearing a pair of those swedish suede slippers with the sheepswool lining and the little fecker was in there. I've never burnt a pair of slippers (or socks) so fast. Pity, I really liked those slippers ..
Lin
Sunday, April 15th, 2012 what was it then Lin?A flea???? sorry to hear about your slippers...I have a feeling they're somehow getting inside the top of my socks and that's why I'm being bitten so badly there..

Sunday, April 15th, 2012 golden rule with fleas, is treat animal AND house/ bedding at the SAME time, fleas can be carried from outdoors to indoors on your clothing etc, so if your bitten in the house ,there must be some on a mat/carpet, even the under part of couches!, flea larvae can lie dorment for years,an be triggered by the right circumstance to hatch, so make sure any treatment you get for house/bedding ,says it kills larvae too.
pearl
Sunday, April 15th, 2012 It was a flea Penny, the only explanation I could come up with is at that time we had a lot of hay and there were hedgehogs hibernating under the pallets and they are covered with fleas. I was in and out of the hay feeding horses so I think one hitched a ride, lol.
Lin
Sunday, April 15th, 2012 ha ha lin!!!
Pearl...that is freaking me out! god..imagine if they got into the house! I try to be really good about not bringing 'outdoor' clothes into the bedroom...and I don't have any carpet or curtains in the house...will have to be extra vigilant! I think I'm going to treat all of the dogs and their beds asap. Thanks all!

Flea Bombs are good for wiping out fleas over large areas, you stand it in the middle of the room and it fumigates the whole area, it is like an aerosal that you set of and you leave the room and let it work for a few hours. We used them when we were renting a house abroad for a while but I am sure you can probably get them here too.But it turned out that our problem was bed bugs rather than fleas ,ah makes me itch even thinking about them, just pray to God that is not your problem as they are almost impossible to kill.
decy
Sunday, April 15th, 2012 you know decy...I've been bitten by bedbugs only once in my life and I remember thinking that no itch could be as bad as it!!...granted it's been a few years, but I swear these ones are as bad! It's fine for a few hrs, then BAM!!itching central!!!

Sunday, April 15th, 2012 Hi Penny Lane I am a professional pest controler and from your description I would think you have Fleas. What you need to do is get all of your house treated for fleas that involves it being sprayed with a residual insecticide, this does not stain any surface and does not smell and will last for 3 months. So if you have any eggs that hatch out in that 3 months it will kill them.
Most sprays will kill larvee but they will not kill the eggs.
Fleas generlly bite you from the knee down, Bed Bugs bite you all over the body.
If you need any further help with this send me a private message.
Flea bombs are good to knock down whats in the room but will not kill the eggs so when the bomb is vented out of the room there is nothing to kill the eggs that hatch out.

Monday, April 16th, 2012 Thanks for the offer Kieran, but I don't think I actually have fleas...most likely bit me when I was messing with the dogs. Haven't been bitten indoors I think, so I'll leave indoor chemicals to the last option. Have flea tablets now for all dogs, so will sort them and (their)bedding and hopefully that will be the end of it. Fingers crossed:)
Thanks all
