Lime
Ive been speaking to a good few people near me who keep hens and they mix lime with the shavings in the hen houses they claim it kills lice and red mites and it keeps rats from the hen house because it stings there eyes as they have no eyelids, has anybody heard this before, the people who told me this have kept hens for years and they seem to know there stuff,

I have heard of this years ago that when people used to clean out there poultry house they used to spread a little lime all around the hen house not to mush that the birds would eat it as that would not be good i hard that it also kills mites and any diseases but i dont know about the rats.

Thursday, January 12th, 2012 I sprinkle a few fist fulls of lime in all the coops after cleaning and i find it works well. I also use it in dust baths it helps with lice etc. Don't over do it as it can burn them. Wear rubber gloves as it is hard on your skin.

Monday, February 13th, 2012 Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't lime have the same effect as diatomaceous earth which is also used for killing mites and worm larvae?
